Keith gets to work while Highways England drags its feet

by Lib Dem team on 11 June, 2021

Residents of the South Park Road Estate have been complaining about poor visibility at the slip-road junction. The Lib Dem team reported it to Highways England but, with nothing happening and reports of near misses coming it, Keith decided it was time to act.

Keith took his strimmer down to the junction on Thursday and cut back enough of the grass to give drivers a decent view of oncoming traffic.

“We report this to Highways England every year. We ask them to come up with a permanent solution every year. They should be sorting this out, not leaving it to others.” said Keith.

    Thanks, Keith.

But it’s a sad reflection that you’ve had to do this.

This is an annual situation. Whilst Keith must be applauded for doing this, it is a ridiculous situation – its not just the South Park residents, its the hundreds of drivers who for some reason do not understand what “ACCESS ONLY” means!

At the same, if you are contacting Highways England, perhaps they could be asked to re-paint the “KEEP CLEAR” markings allowing us South Parkers to get to work in a morning!

I don’t have a strimmer or paint brush, but happy to help again if you let me know.

      Robert

Loads of vehicles use the access to get onto the M60 westwards – especially the residents in the new estate who don’t have a real alternative. Can’t blame them really.

hi. I went to the planning meeting for this development. this was my principal objection to it: that the residents would use the already overburdened south park as a cut through. I was assured by the planning officer that this would not be the case……. so again, apologies to anyone following me off the M60 or Kingsway when I’m doing below the 20 mph supposed limit. even traffic police use it as a cut through.

At the consultation for the Barnes project, the planning officer assured me that the U-turn at the site would be retained. But, it wasnt. Which is why we now have to leave South Park by the dangerous route of the slip road, to go south, rather than than safe option of the U-turn.

Hi Robert, we requested the KEEP CLEAR markings be repainted back in March. Highways England responded and said it would be done within 3 months, so we’ll be chasing up if it’s not done in the next couple of weeks.

Some years ago I was taking my son to nursery in Gatley and as I passed the slip road junction a car came straight across and into the side of my car. I had back and neck injury and was off work for weeks and my son, who was in the back, nearly lost his legs. My car was a right off and the driver was prosecuted. My neighbours wife was hit at the same place last year and she had neck and back injuries and her car was a right off. In the past I have spoken with the police and a traffic inspector said that until there was a fatality they would not do any more to stop offenders cutting through. Is it acceptable that we should have to lose a life before this is stopped?

There is a huge need for yellow hatching for the area of the vehicles coming off the motorway and onto Kingsway. They block the road completely, often going through red lights. It then needs to be monitored with a camera so that vehicles coming along Kingsway southbound can get out.
