A further council green bins update

by Lib Dem team on 1 July, 2021

With thousands of green bin collections continuing to be missed each week, we have had the following update from Stockport Council.

Please check on the Council missed bin collection pages if your bin is not collected. Where green bins were missed in Cheadle and Gatley last week, residents were asked to put them out on Saturday for collection, but some people will not have got the message.

As you are aware, TLC have been struggling with sickness and self- isolation throughout the organisation but particularly in their refuse crews. Although there were positive signs that the covid rate was beginning to fall in Stockport, it has risen again over the past week and this is reflected amongst the crews.

Our black, brown and blue bin collections overwhelmingly continue to be collected as scheduled but we are still seeing some of our green bin rounds being missed on most days. Any missed rounds are prioritised for the following week to ensure that residents do not have to wait more than a fortnight for their green bin collection.

The Cabinet has made extra financial resources available to deal with the current situation but TLC are struggling to secure temporary workers. Members may have seen recent press describing the national shortage of HGV drivers and this has resulted in a very challenging market for our contractors. The competitive market has meant it has been difficult to attract and retain temporary employees. TLC continue to do all they can to source additional staff, working with a number of employment agencies to review rates and conditions. They have identified a new cohort of starters who are due to be available for our rounds next week.

TLC are continuing to utilise Highways and Public Realm staff to support the service to minimise disruptions.

I would again like to reassure everyone that the service will return to normal as soon as it is possible to do so safely and there has been no change in the schedule of green bin collections.

I understand the problems with sickness and people being off work because of this, BUT surely if there are 4 bins to be emptied prioritising the green bin over the blue bin would make more sense. After all there are not usually items in the blue bin which cause problems with smell and deterioration as in there are in the green bin.

As I understand it, the council’s thinking is that the green bins are best to miss as they are collected weekly. If a green bin collection is missed, you only have to wait one more week. If a blue bin collection is missed, you’re going a month without a collection. You may not agree with that logic!

The same thought occurred to me Jennifer. Maybe the green bins are with a different contractor.

My Black bin was not collected in Gatley last week so the problem is more than Green bins
Can it be confirmed that the contractor employed to collect the bins had not been Changed
Can it also be confirmed that bin collection worker’s have not had their contract of employment changed

You are correct, Iain. I don’t agree with you and you will have seen MY logic about this matter.
