The Council is proposing to make more land available for burials at Mill Lane Cemetery, Cheadle.

A report coming to the Environment and Economy Scrutiny meeting next Thursday (2nd March) proposes developing 2,187 new plots on the site, at a cost of £362,175.

The expansion includes 197 baby burial plots, along with plots appropriate for Muslim and Jewish burials. By far the largest area of expansion is for regular adult burials and ashes burials.

“Maintaining our cemeteries and ensuring there is sufficient space for appropriate burials is an important function the council performs.” said Iain.

As an aside, do you know any details of the development of the “woodland burial” area at Bredbury Cemetery?

I’ve seen the plot there and can tell there’s been at least a couple of burials. But there’s been no planting of any “woodland”, which makes it appear a rather desolate, uncared for area, which wouldnt really encourage anyone to have a loved one buried there. There’s no info either on the cemetery notice board or anything I’ve been able to find on the Council’s website. The sort of thing I’m trying to find out is the what/when is to happen about planting and whether relatives would be able to mark a grave in some way ( I know the traditional headstone is not compatible with usual woodland burial practice).

My dearest father is buried at Mill Lane and I am concerned with the safety aspect . His plot is near the back along the path and many times when I’ve been there randomers have strayed off the path , sat on memorial benches and smoked weed or dog walkers have allowed their dogs to run off the path and on or around burial plots which is upsetting and disrespectful . Horses have escaped from the farm land at the back and run across burial plots and destroyed some head stones . There are posts along the path way which suggests that fencing or barbed wire was supposed to go up but somewhere along the way this has not happened and I know people are beginning to question how safe they feel when they visit their loved ones . I’ve contacted an PM about this before but nothing has happened.

Hi Alex – we’ve passed your concerns onto the Cemetery team in the past. It is a public space so there’s only so much that can be done, but hopefully there can be some improvements as part of this work.

Thanks. Email me direct if that’s more appropriate than responding here, if you’re able to find anything, of course. No rush – there’s no plans for anyone wanting to use the cemetery any time soon.
