As the Brexit negotiations get underway, let’s make sure that the Conservatives keep their promises.

I notice that your leader has declared war on the Brexiteers – very inflammatory language from an MP and al leader of a party – he should be ashamed of himself.
However having read a few papers this morning – online I must add, never buy a Sunday paper as they are just too dear – it looks like there are already splits within the leavers.

Leaving the EU is by no means certain and I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole process collapsed. I would not bet on any outcome at the moment.

  2. Alan says:

You’re right, the whole process is a shambles, we don’t even know what it will cost. If anything, the referendum should be rerun but this time only stating facts instead of lies, like the famous £350m NHS promise.

    • Bruce says:

Alan – and if we still vote to leave would you want another one?

This is what tony Benn said and how true it is

“My view of the EU has always been not that I am hostile to foreigners but I am in favour of democracy. I think they are building an empire and want us to be part of that empire, and I don’t want that.” On leaving the European Community
“When I saw how the European Union was developing, it was very obvious what they had in mind was not democratic. In Britain, you vote for a government so the government has to listen to you, and if you don’t like it you can change it.”

Dunno about Alan, but I think there’s a case to be made for a further referendum on the final deal – asking the question whether folk accept the deal and leave the EU, or decide it’s better to stay than have that deal.

It really is too important a subject to leave to the politicians at Westminster. There really is nothing wrong about changing your mind over something. But this really is something we should again trust the people to decide.

Now, I can here you thinking – “Hartley would say that – he’s an arch Remainer, with no fear of a United States of Europe”. And you’d be right (although no-one is proposing a USE but, if they did, I’d probably think it a good thing). But let’s face it, many of things promised by the Leave campaign have already fallen apart. No £350 million for the health service. No points based immigration system. In fact, according to David Davis, immigration may actually rise after we leave.

And we’re already seeing many price rises due to the crash in the value of sterling against the dollar and the euro.

And then there’s the likely bonfire of the workers rights that’s likely to follow. I entirely believe Tory cabinet minister, Priti Patel, when she spoke to the Institute of Directors in May last year about “halving the burden of EU social and employment legislation”. Now you know, as I know, that’s a dog whistle for scrapping things like the protection against people being forced to work excess hours (in the same speech, she used the example of allowing lorry drivers to work more than ther 48 hours – do we really want tired lorry drivers on our streets). Or the race to the bottom suggested by longtime antiEurope John Redwood when he wrote, in 2007, about scrapping EU worker protection over sex discrimination, consultation with employees, etc. This is going to be a very scary time for ordinary workers, particularly in the low paid sectors, where employers give scant regard to their employees already.

Never mind making sure promises on Brexit are kept What happened to the Lib Dem promise to sort out loose paving on and around Cheadle High Street , this so called improved paving was commissioned and completed whilst the Lib Dems where in control of the Council , the pavement that was ripped up was in better condition that the pavement that replaced it. Lib Dems stop complaining about others and get sorted the Mess You Left Behind,

    • Lib Dem Team says:

Hi Roy – as you’ll recall, we don’t run the Council now and we’re working on it. Nice to chat yesterday, by the way.

  4. Frederick Kenny says:

It is quite laughable to look at the immense claims Leavers made and the emerging reality.

Every day another mess – e.g. Gibraltar.

Given the state of the labour party we now have no effective opposition – which means we will have an ultra hard and destructive Brexit as the conservatives want this (worryingly it appears France and Germany also want it so as to stop others following the UK).

The lib dems policy of challenge is to be applauded.

  5. Roy says:

    Frederick
Laughable it’s Laughable that you only choose to look at comments atriibuted to the leave campaign and not the Nosense claims of the remainders, we as a nation are doing very well and will do even better once we stop giving to the EU and remember the only money the EU gives Britain is a fraction of our own money back and we are soposed to be grateful.Do you want to be part of a club that threatens the sovereignty of others, who don’t pay their far share into NATO but expected Britain and the USA to provide defence, I for one don’t want to be in this club, you and other remainders would not pay a higher council tax than your neighbour simple because you are deemed to have more money than them, well that’s what being a member of the E U means to Britain.

  6. John Hartley says:

    Roy

You suggest that we remainers wouldnt pay a higher council tax simply becuase we had more money than neighbours.

Absolutely wrong. You’ll find many progressives, me included, who would happily swap council tax for a local income tax. It would be simpler and, clearly, much fairer.

I’ve always taken a similar view about the EU. Those who can afford to pay more, should pay more.

  7. Roy says:

    John

Its very admirable that you are able and prepared to pay more but you and other Remainers forget that Britain has a deficit, Britain is borrowing money to give away, please explain to me the sense in that and who in the future is going to pay for these borrowings

    • John Hartley says:

      Roy

At a time of historically low interest rates, the UK should actually be borrowing more, so we can invest in the infrastructure we need now but, more importantly, for the future generations. Instead, this government has, shamefully, forced austerity on the folk least able to deal with it. And, with Brexit, it’ll be those same people who have to deal with job losses and poorer public services.
